Conservatives pointed to abortion, illegitimacy, and homosexuality as forces destroying the family. Liberals cited domestic violence, economic insecurity, and inadequate public supports as the key problems afflicting the family. Now this is what I think about the merits and weaknesses of these ideas along with divorce and its impact on families and society.

Divorce certainly does have a harmful impact on families and society and each family has problems of their own. These problems absolutely support both the conservatives reasons as well as the liberals reasons. I believe domestic violence, economic insecurity, and inadequate public support are incidents that lead to failed marriages. Abortion, illegitimacy, and homosexuality destroys families as well. Whether these incidents are chosen or completely uncontrollable it is up to that partnership to either pull through or divorce.
Barbara Defoe Whitehead in " The Making of a Divorce Culture" certainly lays out reality. We as Americans all wish to go into a marriage believing that it will last until eternity but it is factual that the percentage of lasting marriages has decreased significantly. Why is it that divorce is frowned upon? After all it is not our life, we are not struggling and all though the actual process of divorce may seem easy I am sure the emotional toll it takes on the family is far from easy.
